A few kilometers from Rovereto, Volano is a small jewel that tells over a thousand years of Trentino history. Its Longobard origins date back to 590 A.D., when Paul the Deacon made the first mention of it, and even today the village retains intact the charm of a time long past.
Strolling along the ancient imperial road, the historic heart reveals itself among elegant frescoed palaces and Renaissance portals, dominated by the medieval Des Tor Tower. Standing out among the architectural treasures is the Gothic church of San Rocco, a jewel of the Trentino Renaissance dating back to the 15th-16th centuries, which houses original frescoes of extraordinary artistic value, recently restored to their full splendor.
The Parish Church of the Purification of Mary completes the village’s religious heritage, while the Hermitage of St. Cecilia, set in the rock since 1611, gives unique emotions to those who walk the scenic path leading there.
