Volano is an Italian municipality of 3 151 inhabitants in the province of Trento.

It is located on the left bank of the Adige River, about 4 km north of Rovereto, in the heart of Vallagarina.

The name perhaps derives from the Latin abellana (hazelnut), and probably refers to the hazelnuts that grew in the area at the time. According to another theory-although little credited-the name derives from the Latin patronymics Avolius, Bolanius or Volius.

The first mentions of Volano are by Paul Deacon, in “Historia Longobardorum,” in 590 AD. There are then documents dating back to the late 1100s where the town is called Avolano or Avolani, thus going to confirm the first theory about the origin of the name.

Other hypotheses lean more toward a Celtic origin, from Vo-Land, meaning land near the river.
