Genoni is a small town in Sarcidano that preserves an invaluable natural and archaeological heritage. It stands on the slopes of the Santu Antine hill, whose morphology has certainly invited populations from the earliest times to settle in this area. The ancient human presence is given by the numerous Nuragic constructions, so much so that Genoni is among the areas with the highest density of sites.
Later, Punics, Romans and Vandals chose to inhabit the territory of Genoni, as the presence of ruins from the different eras suggests.
On the top of the hill, in addition to the presence of nuraghi, there is a sacred well about 40 meters deep, from which interesting artifacts from various eras have been recovered. Also on the hill are the walls of a Punic fortress and the ruins of a Romanesque church dedicated to St. Helen and St. Constantine the Great.
The administrative territory is enriched by about one-third of the Giara Plateau, known for its high naturalistic value. The Giara, in addition to being included in the Regional Parks system, is an SCI area, characterized by the presence of forests, thickets and endemic flora, natural ponds rich in avifauna and, above all, the famous “Giara pony,” which can be observed free and in the wild.
