The village of Genuri covers an area of 770 hectares, on the southwestern slopes of the Giara plateau, at an elevation of 226 m. It has a population of 311. The town is traversed by RIO SADURU, which originates from the Giara with the name RIU BOLANTI.
In the Middle Ages, the town was part of theGiudicato d’Arborea, in the department of Marmilla; later it belonged to the Marquisate of Quirra. Until 1775 it formed with Setzu a single prebend of a canon of the cathedral of Ales.
The origin of the name may come from the Latin words Janna ( door) and Urus ( bull), interpretable as“door of the bull,” or simply“little door,” from the diminutive of the Sardinian “genna” (gennulliu).
In the past, the production of colorful woolen carpets and bedspreads was flourishing; today, however, the prevalent activity is the cultivation of cereals, legumes and olive growing with the production of excellent quality oil due to the presence of centuries-old olive trees.
Some families still hand down, even today, the art of palm leaf processing at Easter and the production of baskets made of reed and olive.
