Oniferi

Oniferi is a medieval village in the Barbagia di Ollolai, divided into six wards populated by 900 inhabitants. At the center of the village are the new parish church of Sant’Anna, whose earliest structure dates from the 15th century, and the former parish church of San Gavino martire, dating from the 15th century. Oniferi is one of the centers where the tradition of tenor singing is alive, handed down from generation to generation and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Inhabited since the Neolithic, the territory of Oniferi is very rich in archaeological sites: numerous domus de Janas, dolmens, menhirs, Giants’ tombs and about forty nuraghi, placed to control the territory and attributable to the long period between the Middle Bronze and Iron Ages (1700-900 BC), including Ola, Murtas, Badu Pedrosu and Brodu. Near the latter is one of the three most interesting pre-Nuragic necropolises, carved into the rock and with walls on which symbolic elements are engraved. The second is that of sos Settiles, surrounded by menhirs. The third is the necropolis of sas Concas, a complex of twenty domus de Janas, the largest and oldest (dating to 2700 B.C.) in Barbagia. The fascinating prehistoric monument (among the most important in Sardinia) is distinguished not only by its large and articulated layout, but also by mysterious architectural and symbolic elements: on the walls of some of the tombs – of the Hemicycle, the Tenth and the New West – graffiti depicting stylized men upside down, perhaps the deceased, are engraved.
