Pabillonis

Pabillonis is a municipality in the Province of South Sardinia located in the north-central part of the Campidano plain. Encompassed between the two natural waterways “Flumini Malu” and “Flumini Bellu,” it was known as “Sa bidda de is pingiadas” (the country of pots and pans) for the processing of baked earth, particularly pots, jugs, tiles, crockery and other utensils that have become symbols of healthy cooking and typical souvenirs. Baked earth processing became established as early as the 17th century due to the abundance of the raw material, clay, which was easily found along the riverbanks. The Pabillonese economy is mainly tied to the agro-pastoral sector and traditions. In the 1980s, the “Is Pingiadas” pot monument was created in Sardinia Street (included in the route), a very characteristic work made of concrete that represents the symbol of the village.
Two historic churches can be seen within the village. One is the Beata Vergine della Neve Parish Church, dating back to the 16th century as reflected in direct and indirect historical records. The other is the ancient Church of St. John the Baptist, in the square of the same name, dating back to the 14th century, originally a parish church. A third church, with a large churchyard and very recently built, is dedicated instead to Our Lady of Fatima.
The Nuragic civilization has left as its most important testimonies the nuraghe of “Santu Sciori” and the “Nuraxi Fenu.” Currently these sites and others of Romanesque origin are being studied and enhanced.
In the historic center, restored and made usable, along with several old private homes, two typical old earthen dwellings, the Casa Museo and the Casa Matta, are located. Pabillonis is also known for the art of pyrotechnics “the capital of Fireworks, “is arroderis” of our country illuminate the night of so many religious solemnities throughout Sardinia, Italy and the world.
