Simala

Simala is a small municipality of medieval origin located in the historical region of Parte Montis of the ancient Giudicato of Arborea.

The main nucleus of the settlement consists of a crossroads on which stands the parish church dedicated to St. Nicholas. Built on a pre-existing small church, it was consecrated in 1777. The sacred building has a Latin cross plan and a single nave.

Surrounding the church is the historic center characterized by winding streets delineating urban blocks formed by courtyard houses accessed through large portals that testify to the prestige and cultural sensitivity of the owners who built them. They are so numerous that Simala is known as the country of portals.

Next to the parish church rose, in different eras, the cemetery, Monte Granatico, the town hall, the Oratory of the Most Holy Rosary, the parish house, and a number of manor houses, including the neoclassically inspired mansions of the Diana, Cancedda and Massidda families.
