With an ancient agro-pastoral tradition, Assolo is located in upper Marmilla. It preserves intact the historic center with its characteristic “a corte” houses and ancient portals. Facing the beautiful parish church of San Sebastiano of 1633 is the 19th-century Monte Granatico, while, just 1 km from the town, within a picturesque olive grove, stands the church of Santa Lucia, whose earliest structure can be traced back to the 7th century; around it lies an important archaeological area with evidence from the Nuragic to the early medieval period. The past resurfaces in numerous archaeological sites, which tell a time span of more than five thousand years with nuraghi, villages and necropolis from where very interesting finds come. The area is immersed in an extremely evocative landscape, rich in holm oaks and cork oaks and dotted with springs that often go to form waterfalls of pure, very fresh water. A short distance from the town, the Giara plateau holds in an unspoiled nature of forests, grasslands and seasonal lakes numerous herds of the famous wild horses. Assolo preserves intact a great heritage of traditions, festivals and fairs. Among them, the feast of Santa Lucia, on the third Sunday in September, constitutes a not-to-be-missed event. In recent years, the Living Crib event, which takes place in conjunction with the Christmas festivities and is considered the largest in Italy, has great resonance.
