Amsicora Stadium is the former soccer stadium in the Sardinian capital where the Cagliari team won the 1970 Scudetto. Built in the early 1920s, it is among the oldest stadiums in Italy.
The facility was born as the new home of the Gymnastics Society of the same name. Under the Ventennio Fascista, the Amsicora was leased by the P.N.F. and renamed Campo Dux. After World War II, the society managed to wrest the facility from the Allies, who had turned it into a vehicle depot. In 1951 it became the new home of Cagliari Calcio, which played there until September 1970 when the team moved to the new Sant’Elia stadium, leaving the facility to the Amsicora Gymnastics Society, now the sole owner.
It is currently a multipurpose sports facility built in a triangular area of 32,700 square meters. The entrance, in the style of the 20-year fascist period, consists of a symmetrical squared portal with a stylized central fascio littorio (fascio littorio) and lettering above. It is used for top division and youth field field hockey games; in fact, there is an artificial turf field for field hockey inside, as well as an athletic track and two gyms. The facility has a maximum capacity of 8,000 while in the 1960s, when it hosted Gigi Riva’s Cagliari matches, it could hold 26,000 spectators.
