Archaeological complex of “Via Libio 53”

The archaeological complex consists of several burials from the Roman period located in the eastern sector of the Turris Libisonis necropolis, in the vicinity of a newly investigated section of the city wall. Discovered in 2000, the site is now located in the basement of a privately owned building at the back of Piazza Umberto I. The monumental complex consists of two large hypogeic chambers with several arcosolium tombs dug into the outcropping limestone and other inhumation burials. The rich decoration on painted plasters on the walls of the burials is interesting: one of them depicts a chariot racing with charioteer and horses, similar to a depiction at the Tanca Borgona Hypogeum.
