The structure, built in the first decade of the 1900s with the destination of “accommodation of the lanternmen” in the employ of the Ministry of the Navy, located about 600 meters from Cala Reale in the direction of Fornelli, has been designated as a Sea Observatory.
The building is structured on two levels, and on the ground floor is located The Sea Turtle Recovery Center.
The project is made possible thanks to the European Commission’s Life Natura program and co-financed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry – Directorate General for Fisheries and the Marche Region, with the specific intent of carrying out a major national initiative for the conservation of the sea turtle “Caretta caretta,” the most common in the Mediterranean.
The Center also monitors nesting sites and monitors and studies other marine species, including small cetaceans and sharks, and employs an operational staff specialized in the field.
The Recovery Center is equipped with a veterinary room and two rooms equipped with modular tanks for the housing of animals that are injured or in need of care, one of which is not accessible to visitors so that suffering animals do not suffer additional stress.
All tanks are equipped with a water filtration and purification system.
