Founded on September 1, 1936, by the then Regia Aeronautica was established for the purpose of assisting aircraft on the Rome-Cagliari airline, and monitoring local weather conditions. It has changed dependencies over the years to its current one, which is the National Center for Aeronautical Meteorology and Climatology at Pratica di Mare (Rome). Carries out hourly (24 h on 24 h, 365 days a year) weather observations by qualified personnel. The observations are representative of an area with a radius of 70 km. In case of need, it carries out tasks to assist public and private facilities in charge of safeguarding lives and property, providing forecasts “thanks to the support of the forecasting room in Decimomannu, the only one in Sardinia.” In 80 years of service, the meteorological station has processed and stored data, creating a database and a rich and comprehensive historical archive, the only example in the Ogliastra area and one of the most comprehensive regionally and nationally.
