The Cathedral of Ozieri, rises from the renovation of the former church of Santa Maria.
With the suppression of the dioceses of Castro and Bisarcio in 1503, the Church of Santa Maria di Ozieri became the most important church in the vicariate, and in 1550 it underwent restoration and extension work in the Gothic-Catalan style.
In 1803 the diocese of Bisarcio is restored and the see established in Ozieri.
The cathedral was renovated according to the design of architect Gaetano Cima, thus assuming its present neoclassical appearance.
When the work was completed in 1893, the cathedral was again consecrated.
The neo-Renaissance facade, preceded by Clemente Biondetti’s staircase, features stucco decorations rare in Sardinia.
The plan of the church has three naves, with side chapels, transept and apsidal chancel.
Particularly dramatic is the white marble high altar: it depicts the Madonna with angels attributable to the school of Canova.
