Charles Albert Barracks

The New Infantry Barracks was completed in 1846 to a design by Captain of the Engineer Corps Domenico Barabino, to whom the San Bartolomeo Penal Bath is also attributed, and named after the Savoy Sovereign Charles Albert.
The Barracks originates from the need to conveniently accasermare the Infantry Regiment that habitually garrisoned in Cagliari, quartered in buildings insufficient in space and hygienic conditions or rented.
The decision to build at first, and later the building itself, were conditioned by the coverage of the financial expense because of the prudence of the Savoy Administration.
After the second decade of the twentieth century, the building underwent substantial renovations that brought it to its present two-story above-ground conformation, included in a Military Quarter together with the Fadda and Griffa Barracks.
In the hundred years of service for the Royal Army, between the Second War of Independence and World War II, the Barracks housed various units beginning with the Guards Hunters Regiment (formerly the Sardinia Regiment) and ending with the 46th Infantry Regiment “Reggio” which remained there from 1909 to 1945.
Beginning in 1946 the building transited to the Public Security Administration, which, after restoration work, allocated it to the wards of the Public Security Guards Corps.
In the seventy years that followed, the Barracks, which has always maintained its dedication to Charles Albert, underwent various works including the recent restoration of the old mixed warehouses, and is the place that will record the changes in the City and the Public Security Administration.
In the three tour itineraries that will be proposed, through a path of knowledge made of exhibition panels and showcases with period memorabilia, people will become acquainted with the most significant architectural aspects of the Barracks with views of the city panorama marked by the unrepeatability of the location.
