Chiesa de Santu Juanni (St. John the Baptist)

Located on the northern side of Mount S’Ospile, the church has its façade facing the striking entrance to the Su Anzu cave (from which a stream of very pure water once flowed, now piped underground): just a stone’s throw away from it gushes the thermal waters of the same name. Such a wealth of chthonic manifestations cannot have escaped the pre-Christian Sardinians, who frequented these places for ritual purposes. The church has recently been plastered and restored; it has buttresses on the sides and corners of the facade and back. The interior appears to have been altered from its original features, with the elimination of the masonry arches and the barrel vault of the chancel and perhaps an increase in the height of the roof, which, however, has the usual (restoration) brick attic, supported by juniper beams (previously it was of boards) resting on trusses. The church was finished and consecrated on August 21, 1640. The chancel houses a statue of St. John the Baptist and a statuette of St. Lawrence.
