The small mountain church of St. Nicholas has quite ancient roots. Apparently, the first construction dates back to the 6th century A.D., to the year 525: this is the early Christian church of Sanctus Nicolaus, in the hands of the fathers of the Greek Byzantine religion. After the year 1050, the church was abandoned and fell into disrepair. It was in the 1600s, the Aragonese period, that Count Serra, who became the owner of the land in Uta at the behest of the Berengario Carroz family, worked to rebuild the ancient church of San Nicola. The new church was built exactly on the ruins of the early Christian one and soon became a place of devotion and pilgrimage for villagers and others. Time, wars, and numerous lootings led to the destruction of this second church as well, and for years only a few remnants remained.
The church of St. Nicholas is located about five kilometers from the town of Uta, in the rural area that is called “Oasi San Nicola” because of the wonderful spectacle of nature and greenery it offers. It is thanks to the initiative, passion, devotion and tenacity of a family from Uta that it has been possible to revive the little church of St. Nicholas. They benevolently ceded the land for the benefit of St. Nicholas, financed the expense for the construction of the work, involved and engaged the people of Uta until their initiative became a reality: in 1993 construction work began and was completed a few years later.
