Carmine, in Sardinian Su Cramu, was a hamlet in the municipality of Assemini, isolated and separated from Assemini by several farmlands, inhabited by farmers and fishermen who worked in the Santa Gilla pond.
The Chiesetta historically constituted the northernmost landing place on the pond.
The inhabitants of Carmine, who were called “The Carmelites,” were a group of about 60 families in the 1950s. At the beginning of the 1900s and precisely in the first decade, they built the small church in this locality, upon donation of the land by the Stara family. It was built with the cooperation of all families, both with financial donations and useful labor for its construction.
The small church, made entirely of stone, was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel and was consecrated on July 13, 1912.
The little church has a rectangular floor plan with two side chapels, one dedicated to the Dead Christ and the other dedicated to the Sacred Heart.
The altar contains a statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, given as a donation before the start of World War 1 by Count Ceconi’s wife.
On either side of the altar are two niches in which statues of the saints were placed. The church has undergone several restorations, the last being in the early 1970s. The church is currently open to the faithful, but is not used for religious ceremonies, except for the Holy Mass that is celebrated on July 16 in honor of St. Carmel.
