Arbus, like other coastal towns, was raided by pirates who landed there to raid and make slaves. It is easy to imagine that the people invoked Our Lady to protect them from raids.
The oldest trace of the cult to Our Lady dates back to 1636, the year in which a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Itria was built in the Parish of St. Sebastian. Around 1640 the Confraternity of Our Lady of Itria was founded.
Another certain fact is that on April 16, 1643, the statue of Our Lady of Itria was kept in the church of St. Sebastian. The small country church was definitely built in 1666. On this date the register of deceased records the death of a hermit from the Church of N. S. d’Itria. It can be reasonably assumed that it existed even before this date, since in 1636 the chapel was built in the parish.
