Church of Our Lady of the Rosary

Behind the palace that was built in the 1950s in Piazza Castello is the Church of the Rosary, once located at one of the four gates of the city walls, today in the widening that leads into the historic Via Arborea. An initial layout of the church with an adjoining convent of Dominican friars was erected from 1632 to 1635, but it was from 1656 that work began to expand it, concluding with the facade in 1759. The church has a single-nave hall plan with side chapels both barrel-vaulted, while in the background is the raised quadrangular presbytery. The interior of the chapels is characterized by stone and stucco altars and a scattering of painted stucco with marbled effects frequently simulating false marble inlays. With one’s gaze, however, one is struck by the carved, polychromed and gilded wooden high altar, which is considered throughout the island, due to its size and fine workmanship, to be one of the most artistically significant works within this type of production.
