Church of Saint Vitalia

The church of St. Vitalia, dedicated to the martyr venerated in several towns in the Campidano region, was rebuilt in the late 19th century, thanks to donations from private individuals, not far from the site where an earlier church once stood. The land on which the ancient church stood belonged to private individuals. Consideration was then given to constructing a new building, thanks in part to the offer of new land by two wealthy families in the village. Construction work on the new church began in 1894 and probably ended in 1895, as evidenced by the inventory commissioned by the bishop in 1902. Materials from the old church, now destroyed, and from the old church of St. Sophia were used in the construction of the building, such as two pieces of column placed in the wall and under the tabernacle and the lintel, currently used as the high altar. The building underwent intensive restoration work in the 1980s, during which a squared stone, located outside on the lower left side, was brought to light, on which are inscriptions whose meaning is unfortunately unknown. The church of Santa Vitalia is the site of Villasor’s most important festival, held annually in the second week of October, during which many faithful, including non-locals, gather to honor the saint. Even today, producers, merchants and exhibitors from all over the area participate in the festival.
