The church of St. Luigi Gonzaga was built at the beginning of the 20th century to consolidate the new expansion of the city, and it still plays a role of spiritual and social centrality for the large and populous neighborhood that grew up around the old Gamboloita farmstead and the Vigentino district. The building was built by architect Enrico Castelli as the church of the adjoining convent of the Carmelite nuns. The entire complex was sold to the Combonians in 1958; in 1963 the church became a parish and entrusted to diocesan clergy; at this time it was restored internally. On March 13, 2012, the solemn enthronement of a relic of St. Louis Gonzaga’s heart, which is still kept in the church, took place. In the side chapel is a 1993 fresco by Kiko Argüello depicting St. Thomas.
