The ancient church of St. Augustine in Alghero is known to the citizens of Alghero by the appellation Vell, Old. The small church is located near the train station, in the present Martin Luther King garden, located in the Pietraia neighborhood. The structure of Romanesque setting can be dated to the 1200s/’300s and has undergone alterations over time. It is counted among the country churches in which divine worship was practiced, but no liturgies were celebrated. Rather, it functioned as a transit “chapel” for those arriving from Sassari and going toward Alghero. The small church has a single-nave plan with an apse and a pointed arch in the side wall. The gabled façade has a bell gable at the top and at the sides two walls that probably supported a loggia. Inside is a sandstone altar and a wooden statue of St. Augustine dating from the 1700s.
