Church of St. Benedict

It is located on Via Verdi in the neighborhood named after the saint, which developed mainly after the war. The building, once the site of the Capuchin Novitiate, was founded in 1643 by Benedetto Nater from Liguria, as can be seen from the inscription currently placed inside the convent. Today it is part of the Opera del Buon Pastore.

The simple facade, concluded by a horizontal crenellated crowning, has an architraved portal with corbels, surmounted by a pointed-arch lunette. The interior has a barrel-vaulted rectangular plan with reinforcing arches on the pillars. Two chapels open on the right side, one of which preserves a characteristic arch decorated with rosettes and diamond points in the Mannerist style. In this second chapel can be seen the marble fragments of an altar, once in the basilica of St. Saturninus, and, under the mensa, a wooden statue of the deposed Christ from the church of St. Agatha in Quartu Sant’Elena. The beautiful painting of Christ Crucified and Saints Anthony, Benedict, Francis and Blessed Aegidius, formerly on the high altar, is in an inner chapel of the convent. Other valuable paintings of the Genoese school are preserved in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Cagliari.
