Church of St. Clare

The convent of the nuns of St. Clare was built in the early 14th century on the western slopes of Castello Hill.
The existence of the convent is attested by two documents: the first record dates back to 1328, when Aragonese King Alfonso III granted the nuns an annual amount of grain for their sustenance.
In 1353 a letter from the provincial father Bernardo Bruni names the monastery with the older denomination at Santa Margherita.
The church dates, in its present arrangement, to the end of the 17th century, as evidenced by both the architectural layout and the inscription “S. MARGARITA V.M. 1690” placed outside on the lintel of the side door.
The threshold of the church consists of a tomb slab decorated with heraldic motifs.
The balustrade of the chancel, from which the nuns could attend religious services, is adorned with a noble coat of arms supported by two angels.
The wooden altar, in exquisite Baroque style, which occupies the back wall, houses a statue of Our Lady of Loreto in its central niche.
In the course of restoration work carried out in the 1980s, the foundations of the 14th-century church and some banded chest tombs came to light.
Some vestiges of the convent bell tower are visible on the north side of the church.
