The church was built around the 15th century; its interior features the main altar of polychrome marble, an authentic jewel dedicated to St. Clare and built in 1780 by artist Michelino Spazzi. From 1584 it became a parish and the center of Sangavino life. Catalan nobles had the exclusive right to be buried there, while the rest of the population continued to be buried in the cemetery located near the church of San Gavino Martire. There are two chapels dedicated to Our Lady of Wonders and St. Mary of Sorrows, respectively, and six other side chapels in both Gothic and Renaissance styles. In 2021 it underwent extensive architectural restoration, and the ancient altarpiece and polychrome wooden altar, attributable to the workshop of Michele Cavaro, were relocated to their original location. The polychrome wooden altar was welcomed into the so-called “chapel of wonders” and offered for the admiration of the people of Sangavino.
