Church of St. Cyriac

The Church of St. Cyriac stands on a prehistoric village, giving its name to the St. Cyriac culture. The ancient church was erected in 1741 to thank the saint for a grace received. The story goes that during a journey to Cagliari, Don Giovanni Antioco Pilloni and his horse were attacked by a snake that tangled with the horse’s limbs, preventing any movement.

Thanks to the priest’s invocation to the saint, both were able to save themselves from the infernal enemy. Important evidence of the construction of the 18th-century church is the bell purchased for the bell gable, which bears the Latin inscription, “Ora pro nobis – 1741.” The present church was rebuilt starting in 1949 and consecrated in 1958. Inside are works of art, including a painting depicting the prodigious event from which devotion to the saint originated and a large crucifix and ceramic Stations of the Cross by Dina Pala. Work was carried out on the facades in 2021, including the construction of a new bell tower on the left aisle and a sail-shaped aedicule for the statue of St. Cyriac.
