The church, dedicated to St. John the Evangelist, saw the laying of the foundation stone on May 3, 1992. The structure is spread over two floors.
The upper one, used for the masses of the faithful, features a circular floor plan. The baptistery is a faithful reproduction of the one in the Church of St. John the Evangelist in Ephesus. A side chapel hosts weekday masses, with an altar composed of an ancient white stone mensa from the 1300s and the original base of a column built to be destined for Cagliari’s Town Hall. An ancient statue of St. Rita of Cascia from the 17th century and a statuette of St. Mary Salome, carved from pear wood, are displayed in the church.
The crypt on the lower level, with the theme “The Apocalypse,” features a Brazilian blue granite floor representing the “crystal sea” and an altar with seven symbolic grooves topped by seven candelabra. The ambo in the crypt is a stylized reproduction of the Eagle, associated with the evangelist John. The entire project was designed by architect Angelo Zirano, known for his work on the Sagrada Familia.
