Church of St. Nicholas

The parish church of Simala is a singular example of 18th-century Sardinian religious architecture, complete with marble and wooden furnishings from the same period. It is laid out planimetrically in the shape of a Latin cross with a single nave, covered by a barrel vault, with six side chapels, also barrel vaulted, two of them in the transept. It is characterized by a highly original dome with a rectangular base on the inside (pavilion-shaped) and octagonal with faux lantern on the outside. On the right side is positioned the bell tower from the second half of the sec. XVIII.

The church preserves some altars and other marble furnishings such as the baptismal font basin and stoup of great artistic value. The wooden altars are the work of master L. Gallo, while the elevations of those in the transept are attributed to sculptor A. Diana, who also made the compass and the cover of the baptismal font, both in carved and polychromed chestnut, of great artistic value. Sacred furnishings include some works by Sardinian silversmiths of the secc. XV, XVII, XVIII, XIX, eighteenth-century sacred vestments, Sardinian carpets from the 1700s and 1800s.
