Church of St. Onofrio

The hermit saint who makes people and things be found. St. Onofrio, according to popular tradition, causes lost objects to be found but, even more surprisingly, is revered by women seeking husbands.This church, which grew out of a chapel on the Papireto River, is dedicated to the anchorite saint who lived in the 10th century. The church was founded in the 15th century, was a lazaret during the plague of 1624, was enlarged and embellished in the 18th century, and houses a relic of the saint. In the Cappelletta dell’Addolorata, a wooden statue found under the rubble of the oratory of San Francesco di Paola ai Candelai, which was destroyed during the bombings of’43; and from this oratory also comes the papier-mâché Dead Christ with jointed arms that was displayed crucified and then laid, during Good Friday services.
