Church of Sts. Lawrence and Pancras

The building, documented from the second half of the 13th century, was once dedicated to St. Pancras.
The importance of the church in the medieval age is confirmed by the fact that it gave its name to one of the three gates of the nearby Castro Castle, founded by the Pisans around 1215, and to the towering tower that since the early 14th century has towered over the town that grew up around the medieval settlement.
Beginning in the late 16th century, the place of worship experienced a long period of renewal.
Veneration for Our Lady of the Buen Camino determined the juxtaposition of the dedication to the Virgin with the original dedication to the martyr Pancratius, and in the eighteenth century, in the Savoy era, it was dedicated to the martyr Lorenzo, today’s co-owner of the hall.
The Romanesque building, made of limestone ashlars, has the characteristic plan with two naves divided by arcades on columns and barrel vaults with sub-arches, all typical elements of the medieval architecture of the Victorian monks of Marseilles dating from the first quarter of the 12th century.
Between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, attempts were made to homologate the building to the planimetric scheme involving a single nave and side chapels, which was widely popular after the Council of Trent.
In the eighteenth century the old facade, of which the impost ashlars of the bell gable remain, was demolished and the present one with the porticoed atrium was built, the side chapels were opened and the two semicircular apses were eliminated.
