Built at the behest of Pope Gregory IX in 1236 to commemorate the shipwreck of some young men from the Crusade of the Maidens who died in 1212. Another legendary version links the origin to the journey that the apostle Peter made on his return from Africa, who stopped at the small island. Semi-destroyed in 1738 upon the arrival of the Tabarkinis, it was rebuilt and slightly enlarged by the Porcile family in 1796, who reopened it for worship in the same year. In time the church began to decline in importance, because all religious services were now held in St. Charles Church. Inside are the remains of the Porcile family, including those of Admiral Vittorio and Count Giovanni, his father. It is assumed that some remains found here belong to the bodies of the Crusade children.
