Classical and Linguistic High School “Giuseppe Manno”

The history of Liceo Manno is closely linked to the history of the church of San Michele, entrusted, in 1588, by Bishop Andrea Baccalar, to the Jesuit Society.
It was, in fact, the Jesuits who established the first public school in Alghero in 1588.
The laying of the foundation stone took place on November 11, 1589.
Contributing to the foundation of the Jesuit college were donations from Canon Gavino Sarrovida and Gerolamo Ferret.
For more than two centuries, the cultural hub of the City was formed around the church of St. Michael.
In 1848 the Kingdom of Savoy enacted the first organic laws reforming higher studies, which led to the adoption in 1859 of the Casati Law, which established the State High School.
In 1860 the Regio Ginnasio was established with a state grant, and from then on it was declared Governmental.
In 1887 it was named after the historian and man of letters Giuseppe Manno.
