Coal Museum – C.I.C.C.

Under renovation: the site will be open to outdoor tours with guides illustrating, including through photographic images, the different buildings and the functions for which they were intended.

Opened in 2006 following the reclamation of the mine site, it includes the lampery, shaft castles, two winch halls and underground gallery. The lampery houses the permanent exhibition on the history of coal, mining and the town, with a valuable collection of mine lamps, work tools, instruments, everyday objects, period photographs and documents.

The videos and sound gallery feature period photographs and footage on the opening of Carbonia, interviews with miners, and animations on coal formation and underground probing techniques. The underground gallery shows the evolution of mining techniques in rooms faithfully refitted with period tools and large machinery. The winch room preserves inside it the large winch drums used to maneuver the descent and ascent of the cages in the shafts.
