The Diocesan Museum of Sassari consists of three sections. The Ori, silverware and vestments section is housed in the Cathedral of St. Nicholas at the Aragonese or Benefactors’ sacristy, in the chapter house and in the premises of the old chapter archive. This section displays ancient liturgical vestments, precious objects historically belonging to the cathedral, and what remains of the Assumption jewels, acquired over a period of time from the 16th to the 20th century.
The other two sections of the museum are housed in St. Michael’s Church, which houses paintings from the 16th to 18th centuries and stone sculptures from the 17th to 19th centuries. In the center of the hall is placed the bed of the Assumed Virgin in the figuration of the Dormitio Virginis.
The crypt houses the so-called archaeological and popular piety section, which features architectural elements from the Romanesque Gothic phase, tombstones and ceramic, glass and metal artifacts, devotional objects and clothing items recovered during archaeological excavations between 1984 and 1991.
