Domus de Janas of Montalè

Tomb V, discovered by chance in 1982, is included in a larger hypogeic complex; it was the subject of an initial archaeological excavation by P. Basoli and A. Foschi Nieddu. It is accessed through a shaft that leads to an antechamber, lacking the original ceiling. After the entrance, currently closed by an iron grating, a central, quadrangular cell develops around which seven subsidiary cells are arranged. It is assumed that, originally, the floor plan of the tomb was characterized by a “T” scheme, with the first two rooms and two side cells, and that later the other cells were made arranged in radial development, according to the canons of the so-called “Sassarese hypogeic type.” In the walls of the main room, the largest and most significant of the hypogeum (m. 3.40 x 3 x 1.25), there are low-relief sculpted decorations, such as cornices and pilasters delimiting quadrangular spaces at the sides of the secondary cells. Inside these spaces are six taurine protomes characterized by half-moon horns and highly elongated rectangular or trapezoidal heads. The door of the cell, flanked by two pilasters, shows at the top two overlapping faux architraves and a taurine horn rendered by a semilunate “boat” motif. The center of the main cell, a thin pillar with a sub-rectangular section 1 m. wide, has a horizontal pervious hole, of unspecified chronology. The architectural and decorative features of the tomb allow the original layout to be referred to the Ozieri culture (3300 B.C.); sporadic finds from the M. Claro (2500 BC) attest to a reuse of the hypogeum in the Eneolithic.
