Ederle Barracks

The military complex, located in the locality originally called ls Mesas now known as Calamosca, is named after artillery Major and Gold Medalist for Military Valor Carlo Ederle, who fell heroically on the Piave River in 1917.
The area, owned by the State Property Office since 1860, passed from the Civil to the Military Property Office in 1925.
It was a system of buildings built on the initiative of the Ministry of the Interior and to be used as a house of correction for juveniles, later completed and partly adapted as a military garrison headquarters.
Historically, the first Department headquartered in the “Ederle” was the 13th Engineer Battalion of the Sabauda Division, which was succeeded over time by additional and different departments, until, starting in 1993, it housed the Cagliari Military District.
The history of the District began in 1870 with its headquarters in the Eligio Porcu Barracks, located in the area now occupied by the Museum Citadel, then relocated after World War II to the Monte Grappa Barracks located in Largo Carlo Felice.
On June 25, 2007, the District, by then relocated to the “Ederle,” was suppressed and reconfigured into the Documentary Center in Cagliari, which is still responsible for the safekeeping and management of the precious archive of the files of all discharged military personnel, a link between the army and the territory.
The Carlo Ederle Barracks has been declared of cultural historical and artistic interest since September 11, 2014.
