The mosaic inserted in the façade of the church of San Giovanni Battista dates back to 1958-59 and was commissioned by the Lower Sulcis Land Reclamation Consortium to replace the stained-glass window originally planned by the designer.
A study of the correspondence related to this work has yielded valuable data on the artist’s choices regarding iconography, materials and methods of execution.
Here is how the author describes the work: “The composition aims […] to imprint in the memory of the faithful and visitors the vision of the work of agrarian redemption that gave life to the entire region. On either side of the central figure, two sacred images evoke the fruits of agriculture and pastoralism that constitute the hoped-for resource of reclamation. The lower part reproduces a view of the dam, the perspective of the lake and the surrounding hills.”
