Foiso Fois Canvas

A large canvas (about 3 by 5 meters) signed by Fois Fosio, dated 1968, is installed in the present Council Chamber. Foiso Fois was among the most representative and innovative painters of the 1950s in Sardinia, born in 1916 and died in 1984, who “with his works marked the breaking point with folkloric representation in Sardinian art, surely accomplices of his studies in northern Italy.”

The current space formerly served as the hall of the municipally owned Elementary Schools. In those years there was an obligation for the institution to invest part of the budget in culture and art. The canvas depicts scenes of children and youngsters playing amidst typical rural elements of the place such as an olive tree and reeds.

The municipality of Sini in 2018 reported the presence of such a canvas to the management of the Liceo Artistico Foiso Fois high school in Cagliari and the association dedicated to him. Studies are currently underway on the in-depth study of this work, of which to date would seem to be among the few if not the only one of this size, aimed at its temporal framing and classification.
