Former Church of St. Ambrose or of the Transfiguration

The community of Umiliate, who ran the Hospital of St. Ambrose, decided in 1476 to embrace the rule of St. Augustine; in 1505 Pope Julius II granted them permission to build a perpetually cloistered monastery and erect a church.
The building (c. 1570) with a square plan reflects the late Renaissance stylistic motifs of the time; the imposing dome with central lantern is decorated with a rich pictorial cycle, the work of Giampaolo and Raffaele Recchi in 1676, with the unusual theme of the Transfiguration of the Madonna, surrounded by saints.
The monastery was suppressed in 1797 during the Cisalpine Republic: the church, deconsecrated in the early 19th century, was sold at auction with the monastery; the complex was converted into private housing.
The monastery was demolished in 1936, while the church, purchased by the municipality, underwent restoration for cultural use in 2001.
