Former Convent of Via Satta

Sebastiano Satta Street in Sassari has changed its name several times over the centuries. It was originally the Contrada dell’Argenteria, as it housed goldsmiths’ workshops.
In 1837 it became Via degli Scolopi, in honor of the religious men who founded pious schools for wealthy young people there.
After their expulsion in 1866, the former convent was converted into a technical school, renovated by engineer Giuseppe Pasquali. A small meteorological observatory was also opened there in 1883.
Later, the street was named Theatre Street, as it houses the entrance to the Civic Theater. In the 19th century, legends about mysterious events and presences, including that of lawyer Lazzaro Sechi, were nurtured in the basement of the former convent, later converted into business premises. Former students of the Scolopi schools included Enrico Costa, a well-known Sassarese writer. The building now houses the secondary school of the ‘San Donato’ Comprehensive Institute with both traditional and Montessori systems.
The guided tour includes theatrical performances, concerts, stories and legends related to the building’s history.
