The Franciscan Convent was built at the behest of Countess Isabella de Ferrera, who contributed to the expenses of its construction in 1610. Dedicated initially to the Holy Virgin of Itria until the first half of the 17th century, later named after the church of the same name of St. Mary of the Angels. Franciscans played a primarily spiritual and moral role: ensuring religious, moral and scholastic formation for the community, care for the sick and needy. In the second half of the 19th century, with the state’s abolition of many religious orders, the convent’s premises were earmarked for public use and in 1870 sold to private individuals as housing. In recent years, the monumental complex was again acquired by the municipality and restored.
