The headquarters of the Società Operaia di Mutuo Soccorso (Workers’ Mutual Aid Society), a well-deserving association in the field of social security and welfare, in Alghero was opened in May 1883. The Mutual Aid offered its members, most of whom were artisans, medical care and a dignified funeral if they could not provide for these expenses. The office is just under 100 square meters in size, with two entrances (one from Cavour Street and one from the Magellan ramparts). In it one can appreciate a large room created by the modification of some rooms that originally stood under the dome of the church of St. Anthony Abbot; in this room today one can admire a collection of period reproductions and original paintings depicting members of the Savoy family, Giuseppe Mazzini, Giuseppe Garibaldi and Giuseppe Verdi. Framing these works are numerous period photos, original documents, a marble plaque honoring the building’s donor Antonio Baia Piras, and a large pictorial depiction of the symbols of the Workers’ Brotherhood.
