Headquarters XVIII “Castroreale”

Caposaldo XVIII, codenamed “Castroreale,” was an integral part of the fortified system called the Containment Arch, put in place by the Royal Italian Army in 1942-43 as its main line of defense. Interesting are the underground concrete walkways that joined the different posts. Bunkers 63 and 64 were camouflaged with vegetation and paint, while emplacement 62, thanks to spartan but effective scenic interventions, appeared to the enemy as an ordinary country building. The emplacements were equipped with machine guns and machine guns. The entire containment arc was supplemented by camouflaged field emplacements, a continuous band of reticulation, and some mined areas.
