Inaugurated on Oct. 25, 2000, the International Comics Center was desired by the Cagliari City Council’s Department of Culture to enhance the important tradition that Sardinia and Cagliari in particular boast in the field of narrative in images.
Aurelio Galleppini, Giovanni Manca, Graziano Origa, Igort, Medda, Serra and Vigna, Vanna Vinci, Otto Gabos, and Antonio Cossu are just a few of the authors who have brought luster to island comics over the past fifty years.
The Center is housed in the premises of the ExMà Cultural Center and includes an exhibition area; a well-stocked library specializing in fiction for images, with thousands of texts including albums, non-fiction volumes and monographs, from all over the world; the comics workshop, where courses for aspiring scriptwriters and illustrators and lectures on comics are held; and other cultural activities not strictly related to comics (creative writing courses, poetry recitals, video and film screenings, lectures). Soon it will also be possible to consult an information archive containing news and documents on comics and illustration in Sardinia and an extensive review of articles on comics.
