“La Marmora” Barracks

Following the demolition of the Aragonese Castle in 1877, the barracks named after Alberto Ferrero della Marmora was built on the same area.
The building, with a quadrangular plan, occupies an entire city block, and inside there are two large porticoed inner courtyards lined with cobblestones.
One of the courtyards houses a plaque recovered following the demolition of the Aragonese Castle.
The interior spaces, aligned along corridors, feature barrel vaults with coffered effect and lowered cross vaults on the ground floor.
They are enhanced by elegant finishes and marble and grit floors.
Today the building houses the Sassari Brigade Headquarters and is home to the Sassari Brigade Historical Museum.
The Brigade, a flagship unit of the Italian Army frequently engaged in operations at home and abroad, was established in 1915 for deployment during the fighting of World War I.
Characterized by regionally based recruitment and a very strong esprit de corps, the Brigade distinguished itself in a special way during the aforementioned conflict, receiving – unique among Royal Army units – two gold medals and a Military Order of Savoy for each of its two Regiments (151st and 152nd).
The personnel of the Sassari Brigade, today as yesterday, continue to operate in the service of the Nation with the same values that animated the Sassarini of a hundred years ago.
Notable interventions include those in support of peace and international security in the Former Yugoslavia, Kosovo, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Albania, Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon and Somalia.
