Library and Historical Archives

The Municipal Library, founded in 1857, maintains a library holdings of more than 24,000 volumes, of which 5,000 belong to the antique collection, mostly from the former Capuchin Convent; 29 are manuscripts from the 1500s, 1600s, 1700s and 1800s.

Most of the editions, essentially works on canon law, are in Latin, Italian and Spanish, of which one is the Latin Dictionarium by Ambrogio Calepino of Bergamo in 1581 and another is the Castilian translation from Italian of the Constitutions of the Capuchin Friars Minor, printed in Madrid in 1644. An invaluable heritage, so much so that the region granted the request to include our library in the National Library System Cluster.

After several relocations, designed to ensure the protection and preservation of the texts, the library holdings have now found, their rightful place on the second floor of the former Carmelite Convent. Located in the same building is the Historical Archives, with its records preserving the historical memory of the community. The soon-to-be-opened Seven Royal Cities Documentation Center will also have its headquarters in the Convent.
