Little Church of Carmel

The church was built around 1630. In late 1960, after centuries of neglect, the church was reclaimed by a community of Carmelite friars newly arrived from Tuscany, and was elevated to the rank of parish. The building stands on the hill of the same name southeast of the historic town of Ozierese, just above the karst cave of the same name. At the time of its construction, the small church stood in the open countryside; it was only towards the end of the 19th century that the church was incorporated by the expansion of the settlement, with the district known as Bidda Noa (i.e., “new town”). The main facade has a double sloping roof surmounted by a small bell gable, while the side facades have hints of buttresses. Inside, the two-pitch wooden roof is interrupted by several transverse round arches, while a triumphal arch precedes the chancel area, which is raised above the hall.
