The Lyric Theater was inaugurated in 1993, at the end of a very long construction season that began in 1964, with a call for bids for a theater building for the city to replace the Civic Theater, which was destroyed by bombing in World War II. Approved in 1967, the design by Bergamo architects Ginoulhiac and Galmozzi, the construction of the large structure was started: 5,000 square meters, the foyers, the 1650-seat hall distributed between stalls and two tiers of galleries, the stage (22 meters wide by 14 meters deep) covered with plaster and wood brushwork for optimal acoustic performance, and the mystic gulf arranged on a double movable platform that allows different possibilities of use. In the years following the opening, rehearsal rooms, laboratories, warehouses and office space are built. Cagliari’s Teatro Lirico, home of the Foundation of the same name, operates year-round with symphony-chorus, opera and ballet seasons. On the stage, along with the Orchestra and Chorus of the Lyric Theater, protagonists of many prestigious productions, have been artists of the highest caliber, who have helped determine the revival of Cagliari’s musical activity. Today it is part of the Parco della Musica compendium.
