In 1469, the ancient Neroni family built on Via Cisterna del Follo what is now called Palazzo Bonacossi. In the next century, the palace was acquired by Francesco d’Este, who added the little palace facing Corso Giovecca for his daughters Marfisa and Bradamante: the block was fabulous, stretching between the two streets and having a grove in the middle. In 1929 the municipality granted, in the space between the two buildings, the construction of the Tennis Club, which took the name Marfisa. Among the members were two young men who would later become famous: writer Bassani and director Antonioni. After being closed during World War II, the club resumed its activities and in the 1960s and 1970s reached the height of notoriety from a sports perspective. The Marfisa Tennis Club is still a lively gathering place and its presence contributes to the preservation of greenery in this part of town.
