Marina and Stampace Kindergarten

The historic headquarters of the Marina and Stampace Kindergarten is located in the Marina district on Baylle Street, according to Dionigi Scano the oldest street in the district. It arose in 1862, taking advantage of the former premises of the Augustinian Friars, with the express purpose of “educating, instructing and guarding free of charge children of both sexes belonging to the less affluent classes in the Marina and Stampace quarters.” It has been inextricably linked to the Daughters of Charity since 1864 and in particular to Blessed Sister Giuseppina Nicoli, formerly a Servant Sister of the Daughters of Charity, a very important figure dedicated to assisting the poor and rehabilitating the piccioccus de crobi, and the Servant of God Sister Teresa Tambelli. The two figures sum up the educational and charitable charism of the Daughters of Charity, who continue their work in the neighborhood to this day. The complex also includes a Chapel, built in the 17th century as the Oratory of the Ancient Archconfraternity of Itria, in which Sister Giuseppina Nicoli has been buried since 1932 and Sister Teresa Tambelli since 2019. The Navy Asylum, an important Cagliari institution, has been referred to as the Central Charity and more recently by Cagliari Archbishop Arrigo Miglio as a true University of Charity.
