Mary Immaculate Parish and the church square complex (Pratza ‘e cresia)

Beata Vergine Immacolata Parish is located in the historic center of the town (Pratza ‘e Cresia) and was built in the Gothic-Aragonese style in the 14th century. The primitive parish of Serrenti as early as 1589 was dedicated to St. Mary Immaculate Conception. At its side stood the quadrangular bell tower decorated at the top with a pierced cornice and with a domed roof; it underwent several transformations. After restoration and beautification work was completed, it was reopened to the public in 1725. However, despite the changes made, the structure of the bell tower remained somewhat precarious. New restoration work would be carried out beginning in 1930, when as a result of continued and increasing damage caused by a fire in 1905, there was the collapse of the bell tower, which led to the demolition of the facade and baptismal font. The facade has alternating projections and recesses. Four half-pillars with Ionic capitals vertically divide the elevation, framing the wooden portal and the windowed lunette above. The tall bell tower rises to the left of the building and features round-arched single lancet windows. The collapse of the bell tower resulted in the destruction of the Town Hall that stood beside it. The center of the town, what was at least considered so by the inhabitants, began to move toward National Street. The Civic Market takes the place occupied by the old Town Hall. Its presence, generates a certain attraction for commercial activities, in fact, the street that, starting from the church square, leads to the Sanctuary of Santa Vitalia, assumed this prerogative. Monte Granatico, formerly the center of agricultural activities, once it lost its economic importance, was abandoned and then demolished in 1973, destroying a historical and architectural heritage of exceptional interest. In its place, today, stands the “Wall of Water” that is, the fountain designed in 2004 by Eng. Alessio Bellu of Serrenti and created by sculptor Antonio Porru of Sanluri.
